Aims:
Specific Aim I
Determine if changes consistent with VIIP develop during 30 days of BR combined with 0.5% CO2 and determine if physiologic changes such as an increase in PETCO2, PCO2 sensitivity, or noninvasive estimates of intracranial pressure (nICP) occur and correlate with VIIP symptoms.
Specific Aim II
Determine if 30 days of BR combined with 0.5% CO2 causes changes in cognitive function, mood, or anxiety and if these changes correlate with the development of VIIP symptoms. We will use two cognitive function assessment tools: the Cognition battery, which is currently undergoing testing in other NASA analog environments and on ISS, and the Defense Automated Neurobehavioral Assessment (DANA), an additional tool to assess cognitive changes, mood, and anxiety that includes a normative database based on testing with active military personnel and athletes.
Specific Aim III
Determine if 30 days of BR combined with 0.5% CO2 causes sleep disruption, alters circadian and ultradian rhythms, and if these changes correlate with the development of VIIP symptoms.
