Description

State of Knowledge: The medical capabilities that are selected for inclusion in an exploration medical system are chosen based upon their potential to reduce medical risk while incurring minimal resource “costs”. However, the boundaries for acceptable risks of a human space exploration mission are unclear and the resource envelope available for these missions is difficult to determine early in the mission/vehicle development lifecycle. A process must be developed to identify these risk and resource envelopes in a traceable and repeatable manner using the best available evidence. An optimized exploration medical system would include all the necessary capabilities to manage the risk of medical conditions within the acceptable boundaries for mission risk while also being scoped within the available mission resource envelope. This optimization activity requires evidence-based and quantifiable trade space analysis tools, which currently do not exist for medical or human system risks.

Approach:

Analyze past, present, and future mission architectures and vehicle designs to identify medical system resource needs and allocations
Partner with NASA stakeholders to determine acceptable medical risk boundaries for exploration missions
Develop, test, and evaluate an integrated trade space analysis tool suite for medical risk
Keeping within identified exploration mission resource constraints and determined acceptable risk boundaries, perform trade space analyses to identify candidate exploration medical systems and their associated prioritized medical capabilities

Target for Closure
1. Technical report that outlines anticipated exploration mission resource constraints with respect to medical system design needs
2. Stakeholder agreement on acceptable medical risk envelope for human spaceflight exploration missions
3. Medical trade space analysis tool suite
4. Provide recommendations for candidate medical systems that are within the determined risk and resource envelopes for exploration missions
