Description
Present State Of Knowledge:
Food is the only countermeasure that is guaranteed to be included on any space exploration mission.  Food can help to protect crew health and mitigate risk of disease incidence, or it can exacerbate the risk of disease incidence.  We need to understand how to optimize the space food system to benefit crew health and mission success.

Research approach:
Investigate aspects such as probiotics, prebiotics, antioxidants, precision nutrition (tailored for individual needs), food system design for improved health and performance
Target for Closure
Augmentation of the nutrition standards with requirements that go beyond use of food for sustenance.
Mappings
Risk Risk of Performance Decrement and Crew Illness Due to Inadequate Food and Nutrition
