Aims:
- Obtained National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) data via Space Act Agreement.
- Correlated biodynamic responses with driver injuries.
Integration/Unique Aspects: Coordination with NASCAR and NASA Legal to generate Space Act Agreement.
Category:
Risk Characterization, Quantification
Subcategory:
Evidence or Risk Characterization
Description:
The processed data were analyzed to calculate peak acceration, change in velocity, pulse length, and other appropriate metrics. Generated Finite Element modeling data using a 50th percentile male Hybrid III Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD).
This Task contributed to OP1 by modeling NASCAR data for use in landing injury risk tools. The higher injury probabilities observed in NASCAR drivers were more relevant for this purpose than passenger car occupant protection systems.
