Task Spinal Structure and Function after 90 Days Long-Duration Simulated Space Flight and Recovery (Completed)
Last Published:  07/30/21 01:05:34 PM (Central)
Short Title: Spinal Structure-Rodent
Responsible HRP Element: Human Health Countermeasures
Collaborating Org(s):
Funding Status: Completed - Task completed and produced a deliverable
Procurement Mechanism(s):
Solicited
Aims:

Test the hypotheses that (1) simulated microgravity by hind limb unloading (HLU) leads to supraphysiologic disc swelling and increased disc height that may stiffen the lumbar motion segment and cause abnormal segmental movement patterns, (2) deconditioning of paraspinal muscles contributes to decrements in vertebral and intervertebral disc variables, and (3) different mechanisms regulate the observed skull-calvaria bone growth during actual spaceflight as compared to simulated microgravity.
