Description:
The results from this study will contribute to gap closure by providing an improved VEMP method to assess utricular and saccular function for use in future studies designed to provide a better understanding of the long-term adaptation of the otolith system to the conditions of spaceflight.
The flight portion of the study was deselected by the European Space Agency, thus only the ground-based study investigating novel methods (head tapper and mini-shaker to provide bone conducted stimuli) to elicit vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) responses was conducted. The results showed that both the head tapper and mini-shaker can elicit VEMP responses but additional development would be required to validate either method to effectively measure changes in otolith gain during spaceflight, especially at threshold levels.
