IMPACT is a set of functions, executed using a set of decision-support tools developed across multiple NASA centers that facilitate trade space analyses for a medical capability based on evidence, risks, and systems engineering principles.

IMPACT  provides a data-driven means to inform human health and performance risk mitigation interests during resource-constrained exploration mission development.

IMPACT allows trades based on risk (Probabilities of loss of crew and loss of mission) and resource characterizations (mass, volume and eventually power).

IMPACT allows the ability to understand the impacts of mission design and vehicle resource allocation on medical risk.

Specific capabilities of IMPACT V1.0

  • Identify probabilities of occurrence for medical conditions for a specific mission and crew

  • Determine how medical risks change as medical system mass/volume allocations change

  • Estimate the expected usage of a medical resource to manage a specific medical condition

  • Determine the effect of competing research proposals on overall medical risk

  • Compare two or more candidate medical systems directly

  • Compare two or more Design Reference Missions (DRMs) and/or crew
  • Simulations across mission segments with multiple carriers
