Aims:
Specific Aim 1: Develop SpaceMED, a distributed platform for in-flight use, to which a broad range of existing and future biomedical devices, systems and software will be able to connect and interact. Key features will include:

• Platform architecture: Being software based, SpaceMED will enable future upgrades to support new technologies or protocols.

• Automatic integration: SpaceMED will automatically recognize, connect to, and collect data from supported biomedical and environmental devices via standard communication protocols (Bluetooth, USB mass storage, WiFi, Ethernet). Provisions will be included for collecting time-series data, images, and video, as well as file-based data and data entry.

• Synchronized data streams: SpaceMED will provide guaranteed data storage as well as in-browser display of synchronized data streams from supported devices.

• Control capabilities: The system will not only enable data collection and monitoring, but will also demonstrate the concept for controlling a supported medical device (e.g., start/stop, changing sample rate).


Specific Aim 2: Integrate designated hardware components with the SpaceMED platform. The high-priority planned components include a 12-lead wireless ECG system, digital video/still camera, Actiwatch, and MCT data files. If possible, support will be extended to ultrasound images, a multi-channel near-infrared neuroimaging (NIN) device, and/or wireless environmental CO2 sensors.


Specific Aim 3: The components from Aims 1 and 2 will be tested for (1) individual- and multi-device recording, synchronization, real-time display, and control, (2) robustness to partial system failures and communication dropout, and (3) performance in laboratory environments or ground-based analog(s).
