Description

Present state of Gap

  1. Given that our mission experiences to date have involved access to virtually limitless resources/information from the ground, we do not know how to predict the type and level of detail of information that will be required for long-duration missions, nor how to organize the information for adequate retrieval and consumption.

Interim steps for getting to the target

  1. Mine available data (Human Performance Database) and DRMs to identify tasks/scenarios for which information availability is/may be an issue
  2. Define information architecture for current ground support (MCC)
  3. Assess current methods for designing information architectures
  4. Define information architecture for long-duration missions
    1. Define areas of significant delta from ground architecture
    2. Develop guidelines for structure for system, subsystem, component, troubleshooting/maintenance, procedural and training information modules
    3. Develop guidelines for information structures that support appropriate allocation of attention and cognitive load (HCI-02)
    4. Develop guidelines for information structures that support emerging technologies (HCI-04)
    5. Develop tools to analyze and support human understanding of complexity (SRP)
  5. Develop tools to validate information requirements have been met (SRP)

Research Approach

  1. Assess current information delta (what is provided by ground) to determine gaps
  2. Use results from HCI-02 and HCI-04 to develop new guidelines
  3. Develop a case study/validation of the new guidelines
Target for Closure

Guidelines for the type, level of detail, and organization of information, and guidelines for the acceptable latency of information for crew tasks.

Guidelines will be derived in part from HCI-02 and HCI-04
