Description
Initial State:
Long-duration missions may require unique and possibly challenging considerations for vehicle/habitat environmental factors (e.g., vehicle layout design, net habitable volume, lighting and noise). We do not know the effect of environmental factors on crew performance within a vehicle/habitat during long-duration missions.

Interim Steps:
  • Review current state of knowledge gathered from HAB-04 to develop a candidate list of vehicle/habitat environmental factors that may impact human performance (e.g., acoustics, vibration, lighting).
  • Identify areas for solicitation and directed research related to the quantification/characterization of the impact of environmental factors on minimum acceptable NHV and vehicle/habitat layout design.
  • Release and implement solicitations and/or initiate directed studies to implement research for identified needs.
  • Assess the relevance and maturity of research results from the solicitations, identifying key findings critical for characterizing vehicle/habitat environmental factors that may impact human performance.
  • Integrate results to quantify effect sizes and thresholds for vehicle/habitat environmental factors on human performance during long-duration missions.
  • Complete Habitability Working Group review of proposed list of key thresholds and ranges related to environment impacts.
Approach:
  • Perform data mining and data collection/analysis of spaceflight and analog environment data relevant to vehicle/habitat environmental factors for tasks/scenarios during long-duration missions.
  • Solicit research targeted at the effects of vehicle/habitat environmental factors on tasks/scenarios.
Target for Closure
