Gap HAB-02: We need to understand what aspects of human physical capabilities and limitations (e.g., body size and shape, range of gross movement) change for predetermined mission attributes, and need to be accommodated in internal vehicle/habitat design. (Previous title: SHFE-HAB-05)

Description
Initial State:

Different mission attributes such as microgravity and mission duration pose unique stressors to the human physical state (e.g., spinal elongation) and its impact to crew performance and vehicle/habitat design is unknown.

Interim Steps:

  • Assess the knowledge gathered from HAB-04 to develop a candidate list of human physical capabilities and limitations that may need to be accommodated in internal vehicle/habitat layout design (e.g., changes in body size and shape, range of gross movement, translation strategies).
  • Conduct research to quantify/characterize human physical capabilities and limitations that may impact minimum acceptable Net Habitable Volume and Vehicle/Habitat layout design.
  • Assess the relevance and maturity of research results from the solicitations, identifying key findings critical for understanding what aspects of human physical capabilities and limitations need to be accommodated in internal vehicle/habitat layout design.
  • Integrate results to quantify effect sizes and thresholds for changes in human physical capabilities and limitations during long-duration missions.
  • Complete Habitability Working Group review of proposed list of key thresholds and ranges related to human changes in long-duration missions.
Approach:

  • Data mining and data collection/analysis of spaceflight performance data relevant to the effects of human changes during tasks/scenarios on vehicle/habitat design for long-duration missions.
  • Solicit research targeted at the effects of human changes during long-duration missions on NHV and vehicle/habitat layout design.
