Initial State: The International Space Station (ISS) currently has three major pieces of exercise countermeasures hardware; the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED), the second generation (T2) treadmill, and the cycle ergometer with vibration isolations system (CEVIS). This suite of exercise countermeasures hardware is a vast improvement over previous generations of countermeasures hardware, however vehicle constraints for future exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit will not be able to accommodate the size and mass of these ISS-class devices. Smaller but equally capable exploration class devices will be required to support exploration-class exercise countermeasure regimens (see A7, M7).


Interim Stages:
Identification of candidate concepts
Engineering testing of prototypes
Demonstration of efficacy of prototypes
Finalization of flight requirements
Validation of flight approved-device with exploration exercise regimens


Approach: External and internal solicitations and trade studies will be used to identify and down-select candidate hardware concepts. Human-in-the-loop testing and training studies (ambulatory and unloading studies) will be used to evaluate and refine concepts. Final validation will occur using an effective and vetted exercise training regimen on flight-approved hardware.

Target for Closure
Identification of a Mars transit vehicle-compatible exercise hardware.  Exercise regimens designed for Mars missions (see A7, M7) must be executable on this hardware. Final validation of flight-approved hardware shall use the exploration-class exercise regimen (see A7, M7) under conditions of a  Mars transit-like long duration unloading analog. Hardware must be compatible with Mars mission constraints (e.g. operating envelop, movement frequencies, duration of continuous use, etc).
