Initial State:
The purpose  of protecting aerobic fitness during both short and long duration space flight is to ensure successful completion of mission tasks. Mission tasks may include nominal activities such as the objectives designed for a specific EVA, or off-nominal situations such as  post-landing emergency egress or assisting an incapacitated crew member. The identification of specific minimum aerobic  fitness thresholds required to perform mission critical tasks will inform mission readiness.  Aerobic standards are expected to be Design Reference Mission specific.

Interim Stages: 
Development of VO2max threshold standard
Identification of alternative aerobic predictors and standards
Identification of most critical metric standards

Ground based analogs with ambulatory subjects will be used to establish relationships between muscle performance metrics and tasks performance. Data mining from studies implementing aerobic and functional task testing will also be used to improve models. Aerobic thresholds (i.e. the fitness standards) will be established based on the relationships. Flight validation of standards will be peformed by tasks addressed in Gap A6.

Target for Closure
Establishment of mission specific task requirements with aerobic standards for each.  The most demanding task(s) for each mission can be used for setting thresholds, thus ensuring that nominal tasks can also be performed.
