Description

Present state of gap

The crew comments database indicates that while onboard ISS, crewmembers have problems with stowage and inventory management, and that these issues are a common and recurrent source of frustration that shares interdependencies with multiple factors including hardware design, procedure design, task design, and consumables management. Crewmembers often have difficulty managing stowage and operating nominally due to a lack of technical knowledge of on-orbit configurations paired with 0g conditions. Errors can result because the simulators and mockups do not provide adequate information about the 0g conditions. Space Human Factors and Habitability currently does not have guidelines and requirements for efficient inventory management for long-duration missions. More research is needed to identify the sources of inefficiency and mismanagement, as well as processes and tools to mitigate the issues that are identified.

Interim steps for getting to the target

  • Mine data (Human Performance Data Repository, Crew Comment Database) and Design Reference Missions to identify tasks/scenarios for which inventory processes and tools are needed

  • Conduct literature review and interviews with the contacts in DoD, other federal agencies and industries to identify their inventory processes and tools and determine potential relevancies for further consideration and benchmarking.

  • Formulate guidelines for inventory processes and tools and/or identify research gaps (if any).

  • Validate tools and guidelines using a case study/simulation (e.g., HERA, ISS, other analogs).

  • Develop and deliver tools, standards, and guidelines to Agency stakeholders/NASA documents (e.g., NASA-STD-3001, HIDH).

Research approach

  • Assess information from Shuttle, ISS, and analogs on inventory management processes and tools to determine gaps.

  • Identify and develop inventory management processes and tools.

  • Use results of operational task performance investigations from MPTASK-01 and other relevant gaps.

  • Develop a case study/validation of the new guidelines.

Target for Closure
Guidelines and standards for inventory management processes and tools that will promote adequate operational tasks during long-duration missions and documentation in Agency documents such as NASA-STD-3001 and HIDH.
