Gap Medical-101: We need to characterize the medical conditions that can occur during exploration missions and their relevant associated end states, management options, and the capabilities necessary to manage them (what can happen, how bad could it be, what can we do to improve it?).

Description

State of Knowledge: An Exploration Medical Condition List has previously been developed with subject matter expert input. This EMCL was instrumental in the development of the Integrated Medical Model (IMM) and all of its associated data and metrics. The IMM was designed to be applicable to the International Space Station and Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Exploration missions beyond LEO will present new and unique challenges to medical care, including reduced communication with Earth, inability to resupply during missions, and limited evacuation capability. These challenges create new mission paradigms that necessitate the expansion and update of previous work.

Approach:

Revise, expand, and update the EMCL to scope for missions beyond LEO
Identify and define relevant health and performance outcomes/end states as well as their associated metrics
For all identified conditions outline the spectrum of disease and natural history
Determine capabilities necessary (including both tangible and intangible components) for mitigation and management of conditions associated with the revised EMCL as well as how these capabilities map to outcomes/end states

Target for Closure
1.Completion of a revised EMCL scoped for missions beyond LEO
2. A medical evidence database that captures all relevant medical capabilities that map to:
a) Revised EMCL conditions
b) Outcomes/end states
c) Risk metrics
Mappings
Risk Risk of Adverse Health Outcomes and Decrements in Performance Due to Medical Conditions that occur in Mission, as well as Long Term Health Outcomes Due to Mission Exposures
