Short Title:
IMM-Neck Injury
Responsible HRP Element:
Exploration Medical Capability
Funding Status:
Completed - Task completed and produced a deliverable
Procurement Mechanism(s):

Aims:
- Identify the components of impact biomechanics associated with the neck, i.e., injury mechanisms, mechanical response, and tolerance or risk to impact
- Develop a biomechanical model of the neck with sufficient fidelity by validating the model response against published data
- Determine the likelihood of neck injury based on NASA spaceflight operational constraints
- Determine the likelihood of injury severity based on neck injury likelihood and impact parameters
- Provide a probabilistic simulation that allows the Exploration Medical Capability Element of the Human Research Program to develop medical kits appropriate to the level of risk and consequence of neck injury
- Provide a probabilistic simulation that allows the Exploration Medical Capability Element of the Human Research Program the ability to quantitatively evaluate the effect of different operational scenarios on the ability of a given medical kit to adequately treat an ill or injured crew member
Category:
Technology or Tool
Subcategory:
Computational Models or Simulations
Description:
The deliverable is a probability density function of the most likely probability of neck injury during a space flight mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The module contributes to the closure of Gap 2.01 by addressing interim stage 8.
