Aims:
- To design a packaging overwrap system such that moisture is controlled via edible humectants and oxygen is controlled via a printed oxygen scavenging UV curable ink.
- To model performance of overwrap system via tools and mathematical equations.
- To design a bulk food packaging strategy that could allow spent packages to have valuable secondary uses thereby reducing disposal loads and potentially lightening other payload demands. Secondary uses could include: storage structures, building materials, and raw material for hardware items.

Description:
This SBIR Phase II study investigated development of active packaging to improve the shelf life and reduce the mass of the space food system, but the prototype did not have the potential to meet the barrier and stability requirements for spaceflight. The final deliverable was a report and packaging prototype, which only further informed the gap of packaging limitations.
