Aims:
- Track changes
in the calcium isotope composition in the urine of ISS crew members
before, during and after spaceflight, and compare these changes to
results of traditional biochemical and x-ray based measures of bone
metabolism.
- Validate
calcium isotopes as a biomarker of net bone mineral balance in space,
and the calcium isotope biomarker as a tool for both monitoring bone
health in space and measuring the effectiveness of countermeasures to
bone loss in microgravity.
- Investigate saliva and hair as soft tissue proxies for calcium isotope analysis.
