Aims:
- Examine the long-term impact of Space Radiation on electrical communication between neurons, and changes in function and fine structure of the sites known as 'dendritic spines' where neurons form synaptic contacts to communicate with one another.
- Determine whether Space Radiation, in reducing neurogenesis, also alters the functionality of newly-born neurons.
- Determine whether, in the most widely-studied animal model of human Alzheimer's disease, Space Radiation differentially affects electrical or physical function of neurons, and/or accelerates the disease process.
Category:
Risk Characterization, Quantification
Subcategory:
Evidence or Risk Characterization
Description:
Evidence on the the long-term impact of Space Radiation on electrical communication and changes in function and fine structure of neurons. This research will provide risk characterization in support of CNS gap 2 closure.
