Aims:
To quantify the degree to which radiation-induced alteration of glutamate function in the CNS impairs subsequent intercellular communication in response to calcium, ATP and glutamate. We will focus on key targets involved in neuron and astrocyte signaling pathways in order to deduce the mechanistic bases for the changes elicited by low dose particle radiation. We hypothesize that radiation exposure will modify essential elements of physical coupling and intercellular communication, thus altering homeostatic inter-astrocytic and astrocyte to neuronal signaling.
