This research will establish a validated method for the evaluation of function allocation between robots and automated systems and their human crewmates for use in future space exploration missions. It will produce computational models of different possible combinations of a multi-person human crew and various classes of robots for a variety of tasks in order to assess the impact of a spectrum of human-robot allocations.. The model will allow NASA to evaluate different configurations based on future mission needs.

The proposed research addresses three main research questions:
1) How should roles and responsibilities be optimally assigned to robots and humans based on a combination of task demands, robotic capabilities and available crew resources, with special attention to the capabilities inherent to classes of robots?

2) What is the human-robot system performance trade-space that serves as the basis for the allocation?

3) How can this function allocation method be validated as creating appropriate function allocation for both nominal and off-nominal operations?

This research will enhance the ability of human-automation/robot teams to perform as an effective team as NASA’s missions go beyond Low Earth Orbit. The goal for this work is to provide a method that can be used early in the mission design process, training and as well as for real-time planning and replanning during missions, specifically contributing to HARI-01 gap.
