Aims:
One of the salient issues in long duration exploration is the importance of the contact with family during the pre-mission training phase. Evidence indicates that astronauts report greater stress pre-mission phase than during or post-mission. Pre-mission family-based support may also provide a useful countermeasure against inflight behavioral health problems. To better understand the role of pre-flight family support and how utilize the role of the family in the promotion of astronaut behavioral health, a literature review of evidence-based family-based support strategies during pre-mission phase for long duration spaceflight and analogous settings is required, as well as an assessment of current pre-flight family-based support mechanisms currently in use. Analogous settings include but are not limited to the military, exploration environments (i.e., isolated, confined, extreme environments), healthcare, emergency responders and expeditioners.
