Aims:
Aim: How long does it take for team members to become entrained in a particular mode of work (independent vs.interdependent tasks)?
A combination of ground- and flight-based experiments intended to identify the causes and consequences of crew member entrainment to independent or interdependent work, and to
develop and test an intervention that will counteract this entrainment. The studies, which are grounded in the research team’s extensive experience with experimental and field based studies of teams, will generate new insights and process improvements that will enable crew members to successfully transition between focused independent work and critical interdependent tasks with minimal switching costs and interpersonal friction.
Additionally, this research team will collaborate and work together with the corresponding research team (Dr. Leslie DeChurch) for the other Team Task Switching project (Functional Work Shifts in Astronaut Crews) for the ISS portion of their tasks.
Ground Analog Resources
Ground-Based Flight Analogs
- Controlled Research Analog, Long Duration (4 months or more) – isolated and confined with spaceflight mission scenario [e.g., NEK/Russian Chamber]
- Controlled Research Analog, Short Duration (2 months or less) – isolated and confined with spaceflight mission scenario [e.g., HERA, NEEMO]

Description:
Literature review of the effects of team task engagement and related cognitive states (e.g.,
mental models) on effectiveness and the potential for residual engagement to create
problems for teams switching between independent and interdependent tasks.
Operational assessment of the impact of team task engagement (physical, cognitive,
emotional, and social) on team effectiveness as assessed by a variety of criteria including
team task performance, cohesion, and conflict, and team member stress and satisfaction.
