Aim 1: Conduct a systematic review of the efficacy of empirically supported psychotherapy techniques presently and historically utilized in spaceflight, as well as other COTS with potential utility for astronauts on long duration missions.

Aim 2: Conduct a review of the literature available on behavioral intervention technologies (BITs): videoconferencing/telepsychiatry, text-based communication via real-time (e.g., instant messaging, text messaging) and time lagged (e.g., email, video messaging, blog) methods, virtual reality immersion, self-guided/ bibliotherapy, and computer-guided therapy or apps.

Aim 3: To test the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of the three most promising delivery mechanisms identified from aim #2 via a three-arm randomized clinical trial (RCT) with a sample of healthy, high functioning adults who report high levels of psychological distress (e.g., medical residents, postdoctoral fellows in the sciences, math, and engineering). We will create a behavioral health toolkit, which will include the psychotherapy techniques identified in aim 1. We will test the behavioral health toolkit in a three arm RCT. Arm 1 will test the self-management behavioral health toolkit alone (e.g., computer aided bibliotherapy) arms 2 and 3 will focus on evaluating the utility of adding asynchronous therapist communication to the behavioral health toolkit via two different technologies identified in the review from Aim 2.

Aim 4: Develop best-practice guidelines for administration of empirically supported behavioral health interventions during long-duration space missions where real-time communication is unavailable.
