Aims:
In 2012, the NSBRI supported the development of such an integrated tool, termed the Astronaut Cardiovascular Health and Risk Modification (ASTRO-CHARM) Integrated Cardiovascular Risk Calculator. This project involved combining risk factor data, CAC scores, and clinical outcomes from three population-based cohorts: the Dallas Heart Study (DHS), Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and Prospective Army Coronary Calcium (PACC) study. The initial version of this tool was delivered to NSBRI in February 2014 and has already been implemented on an ad hoc basis. However, additional endpoint data have now become available to enhance endpoint numbers and stability of the risk score models. In addition, despite reassuring internal measures of model validity, the ASTRO-CHARM tool requires validation in an external cohort before it is suitable for routine use by NASA.
Specific Aim 1: To refine the ASTRO-CHARM tool using extended CV event data.
Specific Aim 2: To validate the ASTRO-CHARM tools using the Framingham Heart Study coronary artery calcium cohort.
Specific Aim 3: To develop a mobile device application to facilitate broad implementation of the ASTRO-CHARM tool.

Description:
At the end of this validation study, NSBRI will deliver to NASA flight surgeons a validated, practical, easy to use, yet robust risk calculator that will provide an accurate assessment of absolute risk of a CV event over a time frame relevant to an astronaut population. The delivery of this risk calculator will contribute to the closure of gap Med08.
