Aims:

Goals:
Evaluate a novel, self-generated LBNP device as a SANS CM. A physiologically-integrated exercise hardware that is safe, low mass, low volume, low power and simple for deployment on a small, confined deep-space vehicle. 

  1. Elucidate how the interplay between and alleviation of increased IOP, ICP, and venous congestion alter the development of SANS

  2. Determine the dosing and effectiveness of a novel, Self-Generated and Exercise Powered LBNP device to reproduce daily, Earth-like postures and activities in order to prevent cephalad fluid shifts and SANS development.

Aims:

  1. Determine the immediate effects of 30 minutes of pulsatile, self-generated LBNP on cardiovascular, cerebral and ocular systems – N=12, males and females combined. Device specific data such as pressure fluctuations inside the chamber and footward reaction forces will be monitored. Will quantify central cardiovascular parameters such as HR and BP, leg fluid shifts, leg muscle activity, head and neck venous volumes, cerebral and ocular volumes, internal jugular vein pressures during and after 30 minutes of supine posture, 30 minutes of activity in the self-generated LBNP device, and 30 minutes of passive LBNP exposure.
