Aims:
To understand how the space environment might influence activation of ERVs.
- To test the hypothesis that microgravity can induce activation of ERVs in human stem/progenitor cells in vitro.
- To test the hypothesis that space radiation can induce activation of ERVs in mouse tissues.

Description:
Expression of ERV-encoded proteins may be seen as foreign and elicit autoimmune responses. These studies could lay the foundation for a diagnostic assay for early detection of genetic instability, and provide preliminary results for a subsequent expanded proposal to investigate phenotypic correlates of ERV expression in human cells and animal models, and address ERV expression in space flight studies
