Aims:
Our first specific aim will be to examine adaptive changes in manual landing performance following g-transitions during a lunar landing simulation. The simulation will be based on the most current HLS design reference after consultation with flight operations directorate regarding piloting crew tasks anticipated for these missions. This simulation will employ closed-loop control tasks in which subjects use a joystick and other hand controllers to maintain desired flight path and null-out tilt and/or drift motion disturbances. Following the standard research methodology, both subject performance (e.g. rms error) and dynamic control characteristics (e.g. input-output describing functions) will be measured. Multiple runs will be used to examine performance with manual takeover of automated landings at different stages of the landing profile.

Our second specific aim will be to examine how spaceflight adaptive changes in vestibular, fine motor and cognitive function relate to changes in manual control performance. The test battery will include measures of motion sickness and sensitivity, vestibular thresholds, dual tasking and eye-hand coordination. In addition to helping characterize how changes in sensorimotor impairment contributes to manual control performance, we anticipate this task will contribute toward the development of sensorimotor standards that relate to landing performance.

Our third specific aim will be to examine how a simple manual control countermeasure will improve performance. We propose to evaluate manual takeover procedures involving limited (single) versus multiple degrees of freedom during the transition from an automated landing approach. As with the development of the lunar landing simulation itself, the specific countermeasure procedure will be chosen after consultation with HLS stakeholders. Other countermeausures such as enhanced displays or just-in-time training will also be considered based on stakeholder input.
