Aims:

The primary aim of your discretionary task is to develop a report focused on immune biomarkers and countermeasures,  compiling a review of existing literature identifying how immune biomarkers relate to the CBS combined spaceflight hazards affects the SM and BMed risk. This review will identifi any connection of immune changes to CNS that results from exposures to CBS stressors (space radiation, isolation confinement and altered gravity) and identify any potential immune biomarkers and/or countermeasures.  We are particularly interested if any of these biomarker connections or activations, reveal any integrated pattern that results in a potentially synergistic immunological responses.  And if so, with this potential synergistic reaction, is there evidence of an impact on operationally-relevant, brain and behavioral performance pathways. For example, possible mechanisms may result in the immune biomarkers (or potential immune countermeasures) creating the potential for a neurophysiological, structural, or functional alteration of the CNS.

GapBMed-108: Given each crewmember will experience multiple spaceflight hazards simultaneously, we need to identify and characterize the potential additive, antagonistic, or synergistic impacts of multiple stressors (e.g., space radiation, altered gravity, isolation, altered immune, altered sleep) on crew health and/or CNS/ cognitive functioning to develop threshold limits and validate countermeasures for any identified adverse crew health and/or operationally-relevant performance outcomes.
