Aims:
  1. Determine the time course and magnitude of changes in vitamin D and vitamin D metabolite status with each dose of vitamin D supplementation.  We will also determine markers of calcium and liver enzyme status to document potential side effects.
  2. Determine other markers of bone and calcium metabolism (including serum and urinary calcium, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D binding protein) and vitamin D metabolites over a 4-month course of vitamin D supplementation, to determine the effectiveness and safety of each level of supplementation.
