Aims:
The currently performed countermeasure for orthostatic intolerance, fluid loading, has been shown to improve a Cardiac stress index, but does not completely restore plasma volume.  This study will seek to improve the current countermeasure by adding a carbohydrate supplement to (or possibly before) the fluid load.

  1. Define the temporal profile of cardiac stroke volume responses to six hours of 6 Degree Head Down Tilt (HDT) with fluid loading and without fluid loading.
  2. Examine HDT effects on orthostatic tolerance with and without fluid loading.
  3. Examine individual differences (e.g., gender and age effects) to HDT and fluid loading.
  4. Correlate bio-impedance and cardiac ultrasound measures obtained during HDT and orthostatic stress tests.
