The Displays Development project completed all aims, contributing to closure of the HCI guidelines gap. Using a caution and warning paradigm in order to complete a set of procedures, the effect of multi-monitor usage and color coding was explored. In order to understand the influence of vibration on reading performance, several ground studies was conducted examining the effects of peak versus extended vibration on readability as well as examining the effect of strobing as a countermeasure to vibration effects on reading. In addition, an in-flight study was conducted in which crewmembers judged different font sizes and other text characteristics during a shuttle launch. Several studies examined of the feasibility of speech alarms and spatial auditory displays. Results from all studies are appropriate for inclusion in the Human Interface Design Handbook (HIDH) in the form of recommendations and guidelines.
