Aims:
1) Does partial weight bearing (~1/6 g) mitigate losses observed with full unloading (~ 0 g)?
2) Does low-dose radiation exposure change the bone or muscle response to partial gravity?
Integration/Unique Aspects: Coordination of radiation exposures with Brookhaven National Laboratory and NASA Space Radiation Space Laboratory (NSRL).
Category:
Risk Characterization, Quantification
Subcategory:
Evidence or Risk Characterization
Description:
Report on whether usual bone and muscle loss observed during planetary missions would be exacerbated by exposure to space radiation.
This Task contributed to Osteo 4 by investigating, in an animal model, the influence of partial weightbearing and of radiation exposure, singly and in combination, on bone loss as a risk factor for fracture risk.
