Aims:
- To investigate the current tasks completed and the information needed by the suited crewmember on the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) display and control module and their adequacy for future exploration missions;
- To define the format and modalities for the information presented for best usability, productivity, and safety;
- To evaluate the required technology to support information presentation, such as voice recognition systems and head-mounted displays; and
- To develop and test of a software prototype system as a proof of concept, using the research results.
This project resulted in design guidelines for the display of EVA consumables, and a prototype EVA display that demonstrates the recommended method of displaying consumables, along with other EVA display format features. The prototype was delivered to Glenn Research Center (GRC) for use in their task of developing an EVA display system. In another line of research, the project demonstrated that spatial audio displays, both alone and in combination with a visual navigation display, enhance performance and situational awareness and add to the intuitiveness of the information display. Further, compared to a visual-only 2D display (V), navigational aids utilizing spatial auditory cues can mitigate the negative impact on performance of the extra demands due to high visual workload.
Mitigation or Partial Mitigation:
The results have been delivered to EVA systems developers, and guidelines and standards have been provided for future systems. These guidelines partially close the gap as they are specific to the particular domain of EVA – a domain that to date has not had display guidelines.
